Join a project that has tech in it which complements the Stream you have chosen
A lot of the SpotADev software projects use the JavaSpeak Effort Based (JEB) license. This license states that in the event of monetisation, monies shall be distributed in proportion to effort. This effort can be measured by Git Contributions. This JEB license is a good license to use for projects which want to thank the devs for their contributions.
Note that there are many many projects on github and it can be quite a challenge for a project to attract devs. The JEB license acts like a carrot and is an equitable way of reducing the paper work normally associated with shares and company formation. The JEB license is much easier to administer than shares - for one it does not require company accounts. It is cheaper way of planning for future remuneration than shares.
Note that projects use a bunch of technologies, many of which are in more than one stream. Therefore you can choose the projects which best match the tech stack of your stream.
These projects also include emerging new technologies which are cutting edge - this is by design.
Note that we try and create news worthy projects which stoke the curiosity of the client. This gives you some ammunition to talk to the Client during an interview. You can share your passion for the project in an interview. This gives you an identity which distinguishes you from the other devs the Client is interviewing. This works in your favour.
